An untitled Algerian oasis genre scene. (Circa late 19th century.)
Orientalist Victor Pierre Huguet made his first trip to Egypt in 1852 at the age of seventeen and seven years later was awarded his first exhibition at the Paris Salon. He would exhibit at the Paris Salon for the rest of his life. He first studied at Marseille under the tutelage of Emile Loubon. He traveled to Egypt and later accompanied Durand Brager to the Crimea 1853 and was at the siege of Sevastopool. He traveled to Algeria and it is there that he painted his most famous Orientalist works, The insight shown in this painting of the every day life of Algerians has never been surpassed. The museums at Algiers and the Rouen museum both have examples of this subject.
Canvas measures 26 x 34, frame is 33.5 x 41.5 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up. Evident craquelure overall.
