AN OUTSTANDING FOLK ART IRON ROOSTER GALLERY TARGET

212: AN OUTSTANDING FOLK ART IRON ROOSTER GALLERY TARGET

A fine and rare example in original paint from the early 20th century with striking bullseye in white on black rooster with red comb and wattle, exuberant rainbow-like cast tail feathers, yellow legs, integral green base with detail, and a five-pointed star floating above the handsome figure. The spring loaded star, previously harnessed to a clockwork mechanism, appeared from behind upon a successful shot. Rare original paint overall and abundant folk art charm. The patina is exceptional, particularly on the bullseye where the surface of the concentric rings has oxidized in a way that resembles a set of variegated halos in graduated sizes. The form and construction suggest an attribution to William Wurfflein, Philadelphia, PA. Similar images in Wurfflein catalogs and price lists (see No. 12 rooster in Wurfflein's March 1901 Catalog and Illustrated Price List), bear a striking resemblance to the rooster with chick target (Figure 3.19 in Sellers' book) offered in this same sale (lot 102).

Pictured on page 43 of Sellers' book (Figure 3.5).
Displayed on custom iron stand. This is the only example the Tuckers have seen or heard of in their 30 years of collecting.
Measures 13 x 11.75 inches, excluding stand.
Excellent original cosmetic condition overall with excellent, unimpeachable patina. There are no issues of damage, repair or excessive wear. The working condition is unknown.
