A PAINTED CIVIL WAR DRUM WITH SEAL OF NORTH CAROLINA

16: A PAINTED CIVIL WAR DRUM WITH SEAL OF NORTH CAROLINA

The ash bentwood hoops in original red stain secured largely by copper tacks both flat and rounded head type, along with a few forged iron nails, calfskin(?) hide heads, later cotton tension ropes with period leather straps perhaps original and re-set at the time of re-stringing, original tole painted tin shell with central eleven-star shield flanked by a folky interpretation of The Seal of North Carolina on the left and a waving banner with red-white-red configuration of three stripes as seen on confederate flags, original brass tension mechanism for tightening the old gut snare on bottom side. The skins and all else except tension ropes appear original. If there are replacements other than the ropes, they are very early to the drum.
Measures 15.25 x 15.75 inches.
Very good original condition in regard to the hoops, the paint on the tin shell, brass fitting, skin frames, possibly the skins, possibly the twisted gut snare lines, - all but the cotton ropes appears original. A very good example free from damage, repair, heavy wear, abuse, replacement or other issues.
