72: RARE 1840s PRINT OF CROSS DRESSING SAILOR ANN THORNTON

The previously unknown hand colored wood engraved image of Jane Thornton with hand coloring, an image of the woman who posed as a male sailor in order to travel from Donegal, Ireland to New York in search of her love whom upon her arrival she learned was dead. Eventually she traveled to Great Britain where she and her story were found out and she could have become something of a celebrity As it was she was the subject of books and lore.

A similar image titled ANNE THRONTON THE FEMALE SOLDIER GOING ALOFT is often seen. This very similar image of identical technique cannot be found anywhere but here, No record of any other examples of this image can be found.
Image measures 7 x 5.25 with a framed size of 8 x 6.75 inches.
The condition is very good, very clean, intact, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears. The margins have been trimmed to the image.
