71: 18TH C. ENGRAVING OF A SAILOR'S HEROISM AT CAMPERDOWN

The engraved image circulated as essentially an advertisement for subscriptions to receive future engraving(s) based on proposed painting(s) of the events at the Battle of Camperdown where the British soldier John (Jack) Crawford shinnied up the mast pole to replace the British 'colours' previously shot away from that spot by Vice-Admiral Jan Willem de Winter's Dutch fleet which was ultimately defeated by Admiral Adam Duncan's British fleet. The 'title', so to speak, reads 'The Sailor who Nailed the Flag to the Main Top Gallant mast head, on board the Venerable, Lord Duncan's Ship, after being once Shot away by the Dutch Admil de Winter. Drawn by Mr Orme on board for the Express purpose of Introducing into his Picture of Ld Duncan's Victory now Engraving by Subscription & which includes Portraits of the Admirals & Officers who so Gloriously Distinguished themselves on the ever Memorable 11th of October 1797. Proposals may be had & Subscriptions Received by Mr Orme.'
Image measures 9.75 x 7.25 with a framed size of 14.75 x 14 inches.
Apparently the condition is very good, very clean, intact, no visible stain, damage, repair, punctures or tears. This work has not been examined outside the frame.
