81: LARRY NOGGLES (20TH C.) MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS

Larry Noggles (Wichita, Kansas, 20th Century)
The Eye Sees Not Itself, But By Reflection (1962)
Signed lower right, titled and dated verso with an exhibition label and on the canvas.

Fueled somewhat by the Cold War spending of the mid 20th century, Wichita, Kansas came of age artistically post war with a period of evolution that saw emergence of its first ever art galleries dedicated to the work of artists who were actively painting, rather than that of historical artists. The founders of these galleries, abstractionists one and all, were the young Turks of the Wichita art scene. They were eager to see their city on par with the rest of the nation, the world, really. Following in the tracks made by IndeX Gallery in the 1950s, David Cale's Bottega Gallery represented local artists exploring the mid-20th century period of abstraction that the Wichita Eagle predicted, .'will not be everyone's cup of tea.' Though short-lived, their efforts are not without legacy. This painting was created in the period Bottega Gallery was open, 1960 to 1962, and Noggle, the artist, was associated with this gallery.
