A polychrome basket in coiled split sumac and juncu, geometric designs, measures 3.5 x 7 inches. Mission is the general name for coiled baskets from the southern California region around San Diego. The material used is often juncus, which has varying tones of golden hues to more beige tones. Purchased from Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Sales and Rental Gallery on November 23, 1976. Native American baskets from the Fred Harvey collection were acquired by the museum in 1933 and some were offered in the museum sales gallery.
A 2-inch area of very minor discoloration at the rim, otherwise very fine. There are no bits of loss, no areas of loss, no repair, no stain, damage, loosening or other issues of any type. Very good to fine.
