11: HARRY LOUIS FREUND (1905-1999) OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD

Louis Freund's biography is full of accomplishments in study, teaching, founding of art departments, founding of art colonies, exhibitions and too much more to list here. He is most important as an artist of the American scene during the Great Depression. It is this period of his career as an artist that is most closely associated with this work. The following passage from his biography compiled by the University of Arkansas provides insight into this work and its significance among the artist's accomplishments and its place in American Art history. "During the 1930s commissions granted by the Works Progress Administration allowed him (Louis Freund) to travel throughout rural Ozark areas in Arkansas and Missouri, painting murals for public buildings and scenes of American life. From 1939 to 1946, he was a Resident Artist (1939-1941) and then Art Department Head (1941-1946) at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas."
This work is signed lower right, the artist's board measures 18 x 23.75 inches, the fine frame measures 23.5 x 19.25 inches. Provenance: from a private Midwest collection focused on the work of Freund and other regionalists of the period 1925 to 1945. A chip in the paint in the tree branches directly over the house, otherwise excellent original condition free from touch-up, inpainting, repair or other flaws.
